Final Year Project

Project Title

Daastan-e-Karachi: Preserving Karachi’s Intangible Heritage

Description

The stories we tell are rooted in time and place. Imagine interacting with them as you walk through your city in real-time. Fatin, together with Talha Kehar, has created Dastaan-e-Karachi, which is an augmented reality platform that proposes a new way to preserve and share Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). ICH is both traditional and contemporary, it need not only represents traditions we inherit but can also include present-day rural and urban practices in which diverse cultural groups take part. This project focuses on folklore and urban legends specific to Karachi and creates a new medium for interaction. The user travels to points specified on a map of Karachi and the application pops up different information on top of real-world environment as viewed through the camera. It also incorporates marker-based augmented reality, by which the user can read an accompanying information catalogue and have different information pop up on every page. The basic idea is to use augmented reality to convey information to the user about their surroundings.
