Project Title

Urban Flooding and the Spatial Mobility of Women in Karachi

Description

My research is focused on the spatial mobility of women in urban cities in light of climate change. For my project, I have used exploratory qualitative methodology to understand how urban flooding affects women's spatial mobility in cities like Karachi. Using a post-modern geographical feminist lens as my conceptual framework and in-depth interviews to understand how Karachi's urban planning, specifically the south district of the city, serves women in times of climate disasters and whether it hampers their mobility across the city. The findings of my research portray how urban spaces can be at a specific disadvantage to women and their mobility, especially during times of climate-induced disasters like urban floods. When we look at urban flooding in the context of the metropolis, we see women disproportionally affected by unequal power relations, poor urban planning, lack of agency, and dependency on others for their spatial mobility.
