Project Title

Understanding Period Poverty – Educational and Socio-Cultural Factors Affecting Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) in Women of Reproductive Age

Description

This project addresses the significant issue of period poverty in Pakistan, specifically how educational and socio-cultural factors affect menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in women of reproductive age. Women constitute 49% of Pakistan's population according to the 2017 census. The hypothesis is that menstruation is viewed as napaki (impurity) regardless of one's socio-economic status. MHM involves not only having access to sanitary products but also accurate knowledge to manage periods with dignity. In Pakistan, many menstruators cannot afford menstrual products and lack factual knowledge about managing periods. The research aims to examine how educational and socio-cultural factors shape practices and beliefs surrounding MHM in reproductive-aged women. The study hopes to shed light on these issues and generate actionable solutions to improve MHM in Pakistan.
