The Role of Undergraduate Research in Pakistan

A symposium titled “The Role of Undergraduate Research in Pakistan” was hosted by the Dhanani School of Science and Engineering on 28th September, 2018 as part of a two-day celebration to honor the Dhanani family and their generous endowment for the School of Science and Engineering. With Dr. Waqar Saleem, Program Director for Computer Science at Habib University as moderator, the panel consisted of prominent professionals Dr. Kulsoom Ghias, Dr. Sabieh Anwar and Dr. Amir Hasan intently discussing the importance of research at the undergraduate level, the barriers it faces and the way forward.

The second talk under TechPen theme was an absolute success with a story like no other. Mr. Muhammad Waqas , co-founder of WonderTree, came to Habib University on 10th October 2017 to talk about Social Entrepreneurship in Pakistan.

Social entrepreneurship refers to those techniques used by start up companies by which they hope to resolve cultural, social, and environmental issues around them and is a relatively new field in Pakistan and has not been penetrated by a lot of people.

In the conventional talks, most of the times we hear speakers asking to keep the electronic items away – but this time I sensed something different when he asked us (audience) to keep mobile phones right in front. Mr. Rumman telling the meaning of his name as “Anar” (Pomegranate) and the funny consequences he faced during interview started his lecture. By that time I knew the talk was going to be amazing and so it proved out to be.
