Dr. Sajjad Rizvi is an Associate Professor of Islamic Intellectual History and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter. He is one of the foremost scholars of Islamic Philosophy, Quranic interpretation & exegesis today.
In the talk, Dr. Rizvi will argue for the multiple layered meaning of the Quran and the many ways in which interpretation makes sense of every little unit of meaning.
The talk will also deal with a particular theory that goes back to the earliest period that asserts a hierarchical and multivocal approach to understanding the word of God based on the observation that each verse has four aspects: an exoteric sense (ẓāhir), an esoteric but immediate sense (bāṭin), a bounded set of meanings (ḥadd), and the points of ascension that lead one to senses and meaning beyond (maṭlaʿ or a muṭṭalaʿ).
