President’s Message: Marking the end of the Academic Year 2015-16

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

As the academic year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the action-packed journey that marked the second year since the beginning of operation. In August 2015, we welcomed the HU Pioneers to join the HU community in defining the experience and culture of the university, the learning path it was going to take and the future of this world-wide expedition that we had embarked on. The foundation had been laid in the previous years: the task ahead of us was to scale up and mold, to work with the fibers already laid and getting around to knitting a fabric, unique to Habib University and to the Higher Education Landscape of Pakistan.

This year has showcased the leaps and bounds Habib University has taken in terms of our international recognition and presence. The signing of MoU’s with Stanford University, Pitzer College and University of Michigan have opened up unprecedented opportunities for our students and faculty. Being at the center of innovations in higher education, we hosted a team from the Stanford d. school and have been quick to learn the methods of design thinking, working to weave it in the very fabric of our academic curriculum. Our 3rd Yohsin Lecturer, Dr. Deborah Fitzgerald, addressed an audience in the HU auditorium to assert the importance of a liberal arts approach to a degree in engineering-an article in the prestigious journal ‘Nature’ appreciated Habib University’s educational model in doing just that: this journey from conception to appreciation has indeed provided infinite motivation to persevere.

Besides striving to adapt best practices from around the world, Habib University has aspired to embed all forms of learning within the local context of Pakistan. From courses in the liberal core to the formation of an Industry Advisory Board and to the advent of our engineering clinic, all learning within the HU walls prepares our students to be well-rounded employees, innovative entrepreneurs as well as astute citizens of our country and of the world. Furthermore, in the coming fall, our Industrial Relations career center will open its doors to help our co-founders transition into the propitious world outside Habib.

Our journey however, has just begun. As I look forward to the HU doors opening to the community for our summer semester, and for our students to embark on their learn abroad experiences, I also wait in anticipation to welcoming the third cohort to walk through our gates; the HU Trailblazers. This class, more diversified than ever owing to our HU TOPS program, will bring with it a new set of minds, thoughts and creations. The next year will also bring with it a diversification of our academic portfolio, an increase in global scholars joining our faculty, an increase in faculty leadership positions, an emulsified role of our academic centers and a continuous strive to look for the right international partnerships.

I look forward to celebrating all that Habib University is and all that it can be.
