Arif Hasan is an architect and planner, teacher, social researcher, and author of several books, including the much acclaimed “Understanding Karachi”. He studied architecture at the Oxford Polytechnic, England from 1960 to 1965, and on his return to Karachi in 1968, he established an independent practice, which slowly evolved into dealing with urban planning and development issues. He has been a consultant and advisor to many local and foreign CBOs, national and international NGOs and bilateral and multilateral donor agencies. Arif Hasan is renowned for his involvement with low-income settlement programmes, and is the architect of a large number of important residential, commercial, and educational facilities in Pakistan.
The Orangi Pilot Project to which he is consultant since 1982, has attracted international
attention, and in 1990 the Japanese government presented him with its International Year for the Shelterless Memorial Award. In 1989, he founded the Urban Resource Centre (URC) in Karachi of which he is the Founder Chairman. Arif Hasan is also a founding member of the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights (ACHR) in Bangkok. He has been a Member of the very prestigious Jury of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (AKAA) and served as a member of its Steering Committee in 1992 and 1995. In 2000 he was awarded the Urban Hero Prince Claus Fund Award (Netherlands). He is a recipient of the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s highest award for its citizens.
