Washington vs. DC: The Impact of Limited Self-Government in the Capital of the (Self-Proclaimed) World's Greatest Democracy

Sapna Pandya, MPH is the Executive Director of Many Languages One Voice (www.mlovdc.org) or “M-Love”, a Washington DC-based non-profit organization which builds the leadership and greater civic participation of the District’s low-income immigrants in solutions that impact their lives. Prior to incorporating Many Languages One Voice, Sapna served as the Director of Programs for the South Asian Health Initiative at the Center for Immigrant Health which was housed at NYU School of Medicine. She has a Masters in Public Health from the George Washington University and continues to keep one toe in HIV/AIDS prevention efforts in India and Pakistan, even while focusing her current efforts on a very local level.
Sapna was first appointed by former DC Mayor Vince Gray as a Commissioner on Asian American and Pacific Islander Affairs in the District, a position she continues to serve in under DC’s new Mayor Muriel Bowser. She dreams of, writes about, fervently supports and works with actively engaged residents who challenge dominant power in order to bring about fully-functioning democracies the world over. Sapna is a DC native of Indian origin and speaks Spanish in addition to Hindi/Urdu, Gujarati, Marathi and English.
