Narrative of Accountability and Financial Action Task Force (FATF)

In the last couple years, “accountability” has become a buzz word in Pakistan. Accountability is now seen as a panacea for our major social ills, especially for eradicating the endemic disease of corruption plaguing the entire country. In order to mainstream accountability as well as due to pressure from the international community, Pakistan, in June 2018, made a high-level political commitment to work with FATF to strengthen Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) regime. While this focus on accountability shapes a new national imagination of efficiency and transparency, the narrative has failed to take into account some significant linkages between neoliberalism and corruption.
Against this backdrop, we have invited a diverse panel of experts from public and private sectors to help us understand the significance and future trajectory of the accountability narrative, pressures emanating out of FATF as well as the strategies and tools deployed to strengthen accountability mechanisms in Pakistan.
