Chapter 17 – Summary: This chapter critically examines the history and impact of grades on education. Bain argues that grading is a relatively recent development in human history and questions its effectiveness in measuring deep learning. The chapter explores alternative assessment methods that prioritize growth, self-reflection, and mastery over competition and ranking. This chapter challenges educators to rethink traditional grading practices in favor of approaches that support deeper learning and long-term intellectual development.
