Free, fair, and responsible journalism is an important pillar of civil society in any country. It helps uphold basic human rights of the citizens against the excesses of state functionaries and illegal activities of non-state actors. Pakistan’s print and electronic media understand and present human rights issues in a variety of ways and under different kinds of regulatory, financial, and political constraints. This teach-in brings together prominent journalists, opinion-makers, and human rights activists to reflect on the current state of human rights reporting and analysis in Pakistani media, especially in the context of a rising chorus of complaints against excesses by police and security forces across Pakistan.
