About

Support frameworks for undergraduate education in Pakistan, both from the government and private sector are rare. The situation is even worse when it comes to undergraduate research. The academy and higher education management in the country is operating under the assumption that knowledge creation only happens, or can happen, at a post-graduate level. This approach significantly reduces the ability of universities to conduct and promote meaningful research at an undergraduate level, resulting in a seriously impoverished educational experience.

Through this discussion, we are aiming to highlight the importance of supporting and strengthening undergraduate education and research frameworks which both the government and private sectors can play a significant role in creating. Habib University is one such example which has been set up as an undergraduate focused institution entirely through the support of private sector.

Dr. Sabieh Anwar

D.Phil, Department of Physics, Oxford University
Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Lahore University of Management Sciences

Dr. Anwar’s D. Phil. dissertation constituted the first demonstration of quantum entanglement in the liquid state. His research has been published in various journals notably the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Daltons Transactions, and the American Journal of Physics. Dr. Anwar is also the Joint Secretary and one of the founders of the Khwarizmi Science Society– a non-profit organization aiming at developing a science culture in Lahore’s educational institutions. Dr. Anwar is a recipient of the ICTP Physics Prize for the year 2008 as well as Aizaz-e-Sabqat from the Government of Pakistan.

Dr. Aamir Hasan

PhD, Electrical Engineering, University of Texas, Austin
Associate Professor and Program Director, Electrical Engineering,
Dhanani School of Science & Engineering
Habib University

Dr. Hasan has served in the engineering branch of the Pakistan Air Force as an aeronautical engineer. His exposure to academia and industry both in Pakistan and abroad, allows students to undertake fundamental research and explore issues that are relevant to the Pakistani industry. He was awarded with Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Military) for the design and implementation of PAF Next Generation Networks. Dr. Hasan played a key role in the establishment of an Aviation Design Institute (AvDI) at Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), Kamra for design and development of future aerial platforms.

Moderator

Dr. Waqar Saleem

PhD, Computer Graphics, Max Planck Institut (MPI) Informatik, Saarbruecken, Germany
Program Director, Computer Science, and Assistant Professor,
Dhanani School of Science & Engineering
Habib University

Dr. Saleem’s research focuses on the development of new processing and management tools that may potentially be useful in the context of digital shape repositories. Specifically, his research improves on learning-based surface reconstruction from scattered data, and he has developed several techniques for presenting a given 3D shape by a series of 2D views. His research also addresses the highly relevant topic of building and querying 3D shape repositories. The results of his research have led to several peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals.
