Accommodation for Students from Outside Karachi

Important Announcement Regarding University Hostels

University Hostel Operation Suspended for Duration of the COVID Pandemic

Habib University prioritizes the health and safety of its students, faculty and staff above all else. After an extensive review of what would be required to safely run student hostels in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic, we have come to the realization that we will not be able to operate hostels with the level of assurance we require to guarantee student safety. We have, therefore, made the difficult decision to suspend the operation of all Habib University student hostels for the duration of the pandemic.

Alternatives to Habib University Student Hostels

The Habib University administration is keenly aware of the challenges that the absence of student hostel facilities will have, especially for students from outside of Karachi, and we suggest the following possible alternatives for these students.

  1. Study from Home

As most teaching in the fall 2020 semester will be done online, using both synchronous and asynchronous methods, students from outside Karachi will be able to participate in all of their classes from home for the duration of the pandemic. This means that students will be able to live at home and access their classes remotely via the internet. We believe that this is the safest option, and we strongly urge students to consider it. In cases, where first semester students are invited on campus for certain courses or essential academic activities, those courses and activities will also be simultaneously available online.

If you opt for this option, you will still be able to communicate easily with your teachers, advisers and anyone else you need to reach online. You will also be able to use all student support services, such as the Writing Center, engagement with peer tutors, meetings with advisers, access mental health counseling and participate in all Student Life and club activities.

During New Student Orientation, we will help all incoming students, both from Karachi and outside Karachi, learn how to participate in online learning and virtual campus activities and how to manage all the tools available for complete virtual access to campus.

  1. Staying in Independent Private Student Hostels Near Habib University

We have identified a series of independent private student hostels for men and women, all located within 1 to 4 kilometers of the Habib campus. Please see the list below for details. We have visited each of these hostels to confirm that they are comparable to the hostels that we had been operating prior to the onset of the pandemic. Given our concerns about the difficulty of social distancing in any hostel arrangement, we obviously cannot guarantee that Habib students who opt to pursue any of these private hostel possibilities will not be at risk for COVID-19 infection. The University makes no recommendations on these hostels or their management. The University’s only role under this option is to provide interested students with the names, addresses and contact information for these private hostels.

Students choosing this option will be responsible for concluding and fulfilling all agreements under the terms of their contracts with the hostel operators. The University cannot serve as an intermediary between Habib students and private hostel management in the event of any disagreements between them. Students whose fees at the suspended Habib University hostels were subsidized previously will continue to be subsidized by the University up to the same rate as was previously subsidized by the University.

  1. Renting an Apartment

We have also identified several real estate agents who operate in the neighborhoods of Gulistan-e-Jauhar, near the Habib campus, who are willing to work with either individual Habib students, or groups of students, who wish to rent apartments near the University to identify such rental units. Students choosing this option will obviously be solely responsible for signing rental contracts and for fulfilling their obligations under the terms of those contracts. The University cannot serve as an intermediary in any subsequent disagreements between renters and landlords. The University’s only role in this option will be to facilitate the initial introduction to the real estate agents who operate in the vicinity of the Habib University campus.
