{"id":7480,"date":"2021-08-06T12:52:54","date_gmt":"2021-08-06T12:52:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/?p=7480"},"modified":"2025-06-19T15:21:50","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T10:21:50","slug":"a-guide-to-misinformation-how-to-spot-and-combat-fake-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/a-guide-to-misinformation-how-to-spot-and-combat-fake-news\/","title":{"rendered":"A Guide to Misinformation: How to Spot and Combat Fake News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>As part of\u00a0Habib University\u2019s\u00a0<em>Breaking the\u00a0Story<\/em>\u00a0series, a webinar on \u201cFake News and Diminishing Trust in Media\u201d was conducted on Saturday, 17<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0July 2021.\u00a0Presenting\u00a0the event was Habib University\u2019s Marketing &amp; Communication Head, Ms. Aqsa Junejo, and co-hosting with her was Eesha Qazi (HU Class of 2022).\u00a0A panel of esteemed guests, comprising of Najia Ashar, Maria\u00a0Memon, and\u00a0Masroor\u00a0Gillani,\u00a0was\u00a0invited to hold a dialogue on origins, threats, and prevention of false news in local and global journalism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The panelists unanimously agreed that fake news has an ability to reach\u00a0<u>a\u00a0<\/u>wide spectrum of audiences, influence their narrative, reinforce bias, and even alter social and political affiliations. The practice is dangerous to society at large as the audience\u00a0<u>falls<\/u>\u00a0into the trap of believing false facts and figures, accepting the agenda of those who have means to control.<\/p>\n<p>The discourse began by\u00a0stressing on\u00a0the\u00a0spread\u00a0of fake news in more recent political history, discussing 2016 United States Presidential Elections. Ms. Memon provided valuable analysis on how false narrative was and can be used as a powerful tool\u00a0by influential groups\u00a0to dictate, and even alter, the political outcomes and\u00a0associations\u00a0of consumers of media. Ms. Memon further compared\u00a0and\u00a0drew similarities of\u00a0fake news\u00a0between\u00a02016 United States\u2019 election\u00a0and\u00a0Pakistan<u>\u2019s<\/u> 2013 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>Building on breakdown provided by Ms. Memon, Ms. Ashar acknowledged that living in \u201cpost-truth\u201d world, news\u00a0outlets\u00a0have\u00a0lost\u00a0their\u00a0credibility. Rather, according to Ms. Ashar, the influence of emotions, hateful or otherwise, is making its way in the deliverance of news. Our panelist highlighted the fact that the line between facts and sentiments in journalism has been blurring, especially given the recent political and social developments.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 702px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-7480-1\" width=\"702\" height=\"395\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Fake-News-Maria-10-08.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Fake-News-Maria-10-08.mp4\">https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Fake-News-Maria-10-08.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Ms. Ashar\u00a0indicated that the practice of fake<u>\u00a0news<\/u>\u00a0is not something newfangled. In fact, almost all socio-political debates, ranging from vaccines to climate change, have been subjected to false narrative being spread\u00a0for decades. By this means, Ms. Ashar suggested that the world\u00a0senses\u00a0the effect of fake news even more today because of easier access to the platforms, in particular social media, that\u00a0broadcast\u00a0the counterfeit facts.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<u>esteemed<\/u>\u00a0panel of\u00a0journalists\u00a0also\u00a0emphasized\u00a0on the responsibility of mainstream media, which has been \u201cpolarized to an extreme extent\u201d,\u00a0<u>according to<\/u>\u00a0Ms.\u00a0 Ashar. The\u00a0<u>panelists\u00a0<\/u>agree<u>d<\/u>\u00a0that mainstream\u00a0journalism in Pakistan has been fractioned in two sections: one\u00a0that overly sensationalizes the news, furthering it from actuality, and second, that despite attempting to provide factually correct news are labelled as defectors.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion also touched upon\u00a0how journalists in Pakistan can defy the spread of fake news.\u00a0 Ms. Memon, sharing\u00a0a\u00a0personal experience of fighting the false narrative, suggested one should carefully analyze whether or not the news is perpetuating\u00a0an\u00a0agenda of the powerful few. Our panelists recommended that consumers have the responsibility to corroborate, cross-check, and\u00a0verify any news before reacting or resharing in order to curb the spread of fake news.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 702px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-7480-2\" width=\"702\" height=\"395\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Fake-News-Najia-10-08.mp4?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Fake-News-Najia-10-08.mp4\">https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Fake-News-Najia-10-08.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>The discussion on fake news also emphasized on the struggles of journalists, who tirelessly work to ensure that only accurate narrative is circulated on mainstream, social, and digital media.\u00a0Adding on to this point, Ms.\u00a0 Ashar in particular highlighted the hardships and dilemmas female journalists in Pakistan face today. To cite an example, Ms.\u00a0 Ashar recalled an incident of a female journalist whose personal details were made public as a response to her\u00a0covering an accurate\u00a0news uncovering an influential individual.
