{"id":5864,"date":"2019-11-28T08:31:52","date_gmt":"2019-11-28T08:31:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/?p=5864"},"modified":"2025-07-21T15:13:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T10:13:08","slug":"data-science-internship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/data-science-internship\/","title":{"rendered":"Banking on Data Science: My Summer Internship Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Muhammad Furqan Karim, a Computer Science student from HU\u2019s Class of 2020, shares his experiences as a Data Science intern during a Summer Internship at Bank Al Habib Ltd.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last summer, I had a wonderful opportunity to work at Bank Al Habib Ltd. as a Data Analyst\/Data Science intern alongside my batch mate <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/from-utah-to-the-smoky-mountains-my-study-abroad-experience\/\">Muhammad Shahzaib Alam<\/a>. We were the first from Habib University to work in the Business Development Department at any bank. Although when we started our internship, we learned that the Business Development Department specifically hires business graduates \u2014 and that we were the only ones from engineering backgrounds \u2014 we performed equally well as the business background interns over there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5410\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/furqan-bank-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My entire six-weeks long (June 17th \u2013 July 26th) internship experience proved to be very useful as it didn\u2019t just prepare me for the corporate world, but helped me in growing my technical skills as well. We were assigned two major projects and final pitch, which was to be delivered in front of the bank\u2019s higher management, including its Business Head and CEO.<\/p>\n<p>Our first project was to build a \u2018Loan Default Prediction Model\u2019, in which we were able to build a system that could successfully classify \u2014 with 70% accuracy \u2014 the loans that would default in the coming months from their previous patterns. Our second project was to build a \u2018Customer Retention Model\u2019 which was to predict whether certain customers will leave the bank or not in the next 2-4 months, so that targeted marketing could be done effectively.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5410\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/furqan-bank-reading.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, we pitched to the management about the importance of data science at banks and how they can leverage it to increase profits and cut down extra costs. Apart from these projects, each week we were assigned meetups with top bank executives to better understand their business as well as the core banking structure of Bank Al Habib.<\/p>\n<p>I should state that it wouldn&#8217;t have been possible for me to do this if I hadn\u2019t been prepared beforehand. I am grateful for the help and support that Habib\u2019s faculty provided, who I also regard as my personal mentors. From the start of my second year, I started consulting <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/SSE\/dr-waqar-saleem\/\">Dr. Waqar Saleem<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/SSE\/syeda-saleha\/\">Dr. Saleha Raza<\/a>, Assistant Professors of Computer Science, about the road track for Data Science, in general, and for Pakistan specifically.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5410\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/furqan-bank-group-stanford.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Luckily, I also got an opportunity to do my \u2018Data Science Intensive Studies Certification\u2019 from Stanford University when I was selected to attend its International Honors Program\u201918 through Habib University\u2019s Learn Abroad Program. Over there, I did take a few courses in Data Science. One of them was \u2018Data Mining and Analysis\u2019 which was being taught by Mr. Rajan Patel, Senior Director for Engineers at Googleplex.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5410\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/furqan-bank-rajan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were also connected to some great Pakistani tech leads in the Bay Area by <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/SSE\/dr-waqar-saleem\/\">Dr. Waqar Saleem<\/a>, which really helped me in figuring out the right path for my future career. Other than that, I took a few courses in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Domain as well at Habib University.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the most exciting courses were Artificial Intelligence and Computational Intelligence which were being taught by Dr. Saleha Raza.
