For this year&#8217;s flagship Yohsin\u00a0 Lecture, Harvey\u00a0Mudd\u00a0College\u00a0(HMC)&#8217;s President\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Maria\u00a0Klawe, spoke\u00a0to\u00a0an auditorium full of\u00a0guests\u00a0from\u00a0academia, media, the business community, and students\u00a0on\u00a0<em>The Importance of a Broad Education\u00a0<\/em>speaking to the audience\u00a0about\u00a0\u201cwhy does the impact of your work on society matter?\u00a0It\u00a0will\u00a0not only help\u00a0make better career choices\u00a0but\u00a0help us come up with better solutions to the\u00a0world&#8217;s\u00a0problems. Studying a diversity of subjects allows us to\u00a0be better human beings.\u201d\u00a0She emphasised that \u201ca broad education should include a tightknit learning community, where it is every\u00a0students\u00a0responsibility to help every other student\u00a0succeed&#8221;.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The Liberal\u00a0Arts\u00a0and Sciences\u00a0concept\u00a0of education merges different disciplines together to work towards a more progressive society, and the\u00a0holistic\u00a0development of students that\u00a0are able to\u00a0understand and work on\u00a0complex societal\u00a0issues, including many faced by Pakistan such as energy or migration for example. Her\u00a0accolades\u00a0include being\u00a017<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0on Fortune&#8217;s 2014 List of the World&#8217;s 50 Greatest Leaders.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Dr.\u00a0Klawe\u2019s\u00a0talk\u00a0gave examples of success when\u00a0disciplines\u00a0are brought\u00a0together via a transdisciplinary education structure,\u00a0of\u00a0facilitating\u00a0and building teams, and\u00a0of\u00a0enabling unusual success: <\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Learning is something humans do well as a social activity\u00a0[\u2026]\u00a0The really interesting job opportunities for most people in society are people who can combine human skills, social interactions, with actually understanding automation.<\/em><\/h1>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\"><p>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">&#8220;Students at Harvey Mudd don&#8217;t compete with eachother&#8221;.. I wish our medical school was like this. She spoke of\u00a0her first corporate job, saying\u00a0&#8220;initially when I would run into obstacles, I would think &#8216;this is the stupidest thing&#8217; rather than thinking &#8216;this is a challenge. We&#8217;re going to have to figure out a way to deal with this challenge and we&#8217;re going to learn a lot doing that'&#8221;.\u00a0Very\u00a0importantly, she spoke to educators on the importance of encouraging learning:\u00a0&#8220;One of the things we need to encourage everyone to do is to understand who you are. There are some things that will come easily to you, and some things that are hard. But that really has nothing to do with how much you can grow in any\u00a0particular\u00a0direction. Throughout her time, she made it her agenda to advocate for and facilitate women working and being\u00a0recognized\u00a0in the hard sciences. As a leading computer scientist herself,\u00a0she is constantly working\u00a0for ways\u00a0to\u00a0help women and girls in predominantly male-dominated fields\u00a0and inspired Habib University students:\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>It\u00a0is important for everyone to take on subjects and areas that terrify them at first.\u00a0When you pick up something that is difficult to tackle, that\u00a0is when you grow the most [\u2026] Being male or female in computer science does not matter because employability is high.\u00a0The applicability of computer science these days is\u00a0ubiquitous, no matter whether you enjoy painting like me, or music, biology, or development.<\/em><\/h1>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Concluding her Yohsin lecture, Dr. Klawe\u00a0spoke of the similarities between Harvey\u00a0Mudd\u00a0College and Habib University, and the importance of what and the way students are taught at both institutions, she stated \u201cSome people feel it is an oxymoron &#8211; How can you be a\u00a0<em>Liberal Arts<\/em>\u00a0University of\u00a0<em>science and engineering<\/em>? Much like Habib, Harvey\u00a0Mudd\u00a0too believes everyone should have a broad and rigorous education. We believe in experiential and interdisciplinary learning and we care deeply about teaching undergrad students to be leaders in their field and good citizens\u201d.\u00a0Further recognizing the Habib\u00a0family&#8217;s\u00a0contributions to education stating, &#8220;I want to recognise what extraordinary vision the Habib family, the Members of the Board, and the founding president have had. That\u2019s what Habib and Harvey\u00a0Mudd\u00a0have in common &#8211; it\u2019s about the people.<\/em><\/h1>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">A dinner was also hosted in her honour at a\u00a0philanthropist&#8217;s\u00a0residence in the presence of 150 guests, at which she spoke also on the similarities of both institutions with active learning, hands-on projects, undergraduate research, and a highly refined scholarship and financial aid process. <\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>HMC in its first years was not nearly as successful as Habib University. When I visited today, what I noticed was just the vibe amongst the students! [\u2026]\u00a0HU\u00a0is a beautiful idea that welcomes everyone. It has the potential to transform not just Pakistan and\u00a0its\u00a0economy and human development. But more even: showing that it can be done in a country\u00a0that\u2019s never had a liberal arts institution is going\u00a0to\u00a0show\u00a0that it can be done in many countries around the world, too.<\/em><\/h1>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Habib University&#8217;s flagship event, the\u00a0<em>Yohsin\u00a0Lecture Series<\/em>\u00a0attracts local and international audiences alike. <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/global\/yohsin-lecture-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Previous Yohsin\u00a0 Lectures<\/em><\/a>\u00a0have\u00a0invited\u00a0some of the most\u00a0distinguished thinkers of our\u00a0times, including\u00a0the likes\u00a0of\u00a0Vali Nasr,\u00a0Dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies,\u00a0foreign policy adviser, and author, as\u00a0well as\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Deborah Fitzgerald, former Dean of the MIT School of Humanities.\u00a0Habib
