The two day conference invited scholars from around the world to discuss South Asia beyond its construction as a territorially bound space with discrete nations. The conference was open to the public and attracted the likes of students, scholars, community members, academics, and civil society representatives.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Some of the world\u2019s top global academics were brought together for this conference, from South Asia, the US, and the UK. The conference opened public dialogue on South Asia can remain intact amidst global geological shifts and political restructuring. Organised around five panels, the first panel was titled <em>Revisiting Urdu Literary Traditions in South Asia. <\/em>A combined paper by Ms Sarah Abdullah and Ms Amina Wasif was presented, offering insight into the diverse genre and forms of cultural representation of the South Asian region. Their thought-provoking papers spoke of traditional storytelling, or <em>dastangoi<\/em> and the fictional characters that were created by the authors. Ms Abdullah recalled \u201cTilism-e-Hoshruba, the subcontinents first wholly indigenous indo-Islamic fantasy epic.\u201d<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\"><p>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Questioning <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SouthAsia?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SouthAsia<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Conference?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Conference<\/a> | Refiguring the Ayyan-figure in Tilism e Hoshruba as the archetypal detective of classic crime action <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dVqcv1t8Gt\">pic.twitter.com\/dVqcv1t8Gt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Habib University (@HabibUniversity) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HabibUniversity\/status\/958998231022735360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 1, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Habib University\u2019s own, Dr Nauman Naqvi was part of the second panel, <em>The Politics of Othering in South Asia: Secularization, Identity, and Environment<\/em>. Alongside Dr. Saba Pirzadeh, the two illuminated the pressing contemporary challenges affecting the world. Dr Naqvi presented an apocalyptic worldview or \u201cmassive catastrophes and massive holes in our ecology\u201d that may arise from changes in our geography. The profoundly disastrous effects of the \u201cAnthropocene\u201d were described in relation to modern humans, or \u201cgeological humans\u201d as opposed to \u201chumans of the past who were historical humans\u201d. He spoke of how the current generation came from \u201cthe generation of the great acceleration\u201d all of whom have a \u201cdirect impactful relationship with nature\u201d.<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Humans [with other species that are a part of nature]have always had a dynamic, impactful relationship with nature, the past two centuries have brought around a qualitative shift in the human relationship.<\/em><\/h1>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3774\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1078\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-1.jpg 1078w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-1-620x414.jpg 620w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-1-940x627.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1078px) 100vw, 1078px\" \/><em>Dr Saba Pirzadeh (left) and Dr\u00a0Nauman Naqvi (right)<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Dr Saba Pirzadeh highlighted the \u201ccontemporary South Asian Literature as a viable discourse for exploring the repercussions of war\u201d, especially enacted on bodies and their urban movements and the ways in which they are expressed, such as in cartoons. Dr Pirzadeh stated that \u201cthe relocation of the South Asian urban girl figure from the margins to the centre approximates and expresses the cultural anxiety, the spectre or colonial violence, the looming threat of sectarian and religious fundamentalism that haunts so much of urban life in South Asia and the struggle of its youth to resist these traumas on a daily basis.\u201d<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\"><p>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/QSA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#QSA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HappeningNow?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HappeningNow<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9T8geGsZHD\">pic.twitter.com\/9T8geGsZHD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Habib University (@HabibUniversity) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HabibUniversity\/status\/959015803076177921?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 1, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Performance, Language, and Politics <\/em>was the third panel, which highlighted the culture and associated logic within South Asian societies. Speaker Dr Sean Pue asked the question of \u201chow literary studies of poetic performance can extend beyond single literary and language communities\u201d which are necessary to break away from stagnation of language. Dr Shirin Zubair discussed the images and representation of women in South Asian pop culture arguing:<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><br \/>\nIn the wake of post-feminism, globalization, and international development discourses, the imagery and representation of women in South Asian popular culture has significant issues regarding women\u2019s changing social roles and identities. How do women themselves relate to these images?<\/em><\/h1>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3777\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1078\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-2.jpg 1078w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-2-620x414.jpg 620w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-2-940x627.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1078px) 100vw, 1078px\" \/><em>Dr Sarah Humayun (left) and Dr Shirin Zubair (right)<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The f<\/span><span style=\"color: #808080;\">ourth panel, <em>Reauthorizing South Asia<\/em> brought together two well-known academics, Dr Edward Simpson and Dr Aasim Sajjad Akhter. Both speakers reflected on the changing structures of the region that result in the effects of mega infrastructure projects. Dr Simpson asked \u201chow infrastructural politics are changing the shape of the region\u201d in terms of how they shape the mind-sets of societies in terms of what they think of borders and boundaries. Dr Sajjad argued that recent studies have shown investments in border regions taking form in the shape of new imperialism that are there purely for strategic reasons.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3779\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1078\" height=\"719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-3.jpg 1078w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-3-620x414.jpg 620w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/qsa-3-940x627.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1078px) 100vw, 1078px\" \/><em>Dr Aasim Sajjad Akhter (left), Dr Fahd Ali (center), and\u00a0Dr Edward Simpson (right)<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Dr Karen Ruffle opened the next panel <em>Religious Movements, State, and National Identity <\/em>offering insightful commentary on the influence of religion on politics. She spoke of the historical narrative of Shi\u2019i origins in the Deccan, shedding light on the \u201ccentral place that material objects had in the formation of Shi\u2019ism in Hyderabad, India.\u201d She suggested that there was a more complicated history of the Qutb Shahi dynasty and its relationship to Safavid Iran (1502-1736 CE). Another panel member, Dr Amina Jamal presented a paper on \u201cfeminist subjectivity that is shaped by distinct experiences of gender, nation, secularism and Islam that are unaccounted for in the framework of modern secularizing state versus moral community that upholds postcolonial critiques of secular feminism.\u201d Dr. Jamal argued for \u201ca more nuanced understanding of what is at stake when secularism is supported or denounced.\u201d<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\"><p>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Religious Movements, State and National Identity | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/QSA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#QSA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JcY9NU0JFf\">pic.twitter.com\/JcY9NU0JFf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Habib University (@HabibUniversity) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HabibUniversity\/status\/959385610946596864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The conference concluded with a roundtable discussion with Keynote Speaker, the eminent scholar Dr Markus Daechsel from Royal Holloway, University of London. His speech addressed the nature and value of history, stating \u201cinstead of arguing with and about history, South Asian politics has increasingly been guided by a desire to by-pass or even undo history.\u201d He further stated that the evidence of neglect of history was visible \u201cin the field of heritage destruction, and architecture, but can also be observed elsewhere, in debates about school curricula, for instance, or simply in the relatively low prestige enjoyed by history as compared to the social or natural sciences.\u201d The keynote reflected on a number of interconnected themes that are all related to this larger question: What does South Asian \u2018politics of time\u2019 mean for our ability to write a decolonised history South Asia?
