In doing so, HU has created a name for itself as an unmatched facilitator of intellectual discourse and learning.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The third annual Postcolonial Higher Education Conference (PHEC) was held at Habib University on 14<sup>th<\/sup> October, 2017. The conference, themed <em><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The Inheritance of Injustice<\/span>, <\/em>addressed issues of colonialism that are prevalent in current times. Speakers brought to the table new understandings and phenomenon focused around higher education and the dire need for \u2018the de-colonialization of knowledge\u2019.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3290\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/phec-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1078\" height=\"602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/phec-1.jpg 1078w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/phec-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/phec-1-620x346.jpg 620w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/phec-1-940x525.jpg 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1078px) 100vw, 1078px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Keynote Speaker, Dr. Mwangi wa Githinji (Left).<\/em><\/h6>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Dr. Mwangi wa Githinji, Associate Professor of Economics from the University of Massachusetts- Amherst in USA, and\u00a0keynote speaker of this year\u2019s conference,\u00a0praised Habib University for taking a leap of faith in creating a Liberal Arts institution in a post-colonial era, stating:<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>It is a Liberal Arts education that has the ability\u00a0<\/em><em>to create citizens rather than subjects.<\/em><\/h1>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">By addressing the question of \u201chow can you have just development if you have a structure that is fundamentally unjust?\u201d, Dr. Githinji compared the similarities in the structures of countries in the southern hemisphere, and provided an understanding of why these societies are currently unable to advance their development.<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\"><p>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Language is the carrier of culture and I am extremely happy to see that students in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HabibUniversity?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HabibUniversity<\/a> have to learn a local language. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/phec?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#phec<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Wr1ApqJSLY\">pic.twitter.com\/Wr1ApqJSLY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Wahid khan (@wahidkhanz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wahidkhanz\/status\/919078542096453632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 14, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold;\">Following the Keynote address was a panel discussion titled <\/span><em style=\"color: #808080; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Imagining Post-colonial Politics.<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u00a0Dr. Suren Pillay from the University of the Western Cape in South Africa began the talk, bringing to light questions about the curricula in learning institutions, and the decolonisation of knowledge, which remains relevant to all nations who share similar histories. In conversation with Dr. Asif Aslam Farrukhi, Dr. Minoli Salgado from University of Sussex in UK, spoke about her inspirations and experiences of writing her book, <em><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A Little Dust on the Eyes<\/span>. <\/em>Dr.Salgado explained how writing about trauma can help people perceive facts:<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In terms of relating to an event there are many <\/em><em>different perspectives but it releases you as a writer, <\/em><em>recognizing what you are doing is mediating someone else\u2019s trauma.<\/em><\/h1>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Her creative expression stems from her experiences of living in Sri Lanka, and watching the horrors of a civil war that perpetuated injustices around her. Dr. Azhar rejected this notion because he believed that it is very much present and existing \u2013 \u201cin the food that we eat, the tea that we drink, the sports which we play\u201d. It was interesting to know that the \u2018ICC\u2019 (International Cricket Council) is derived from its former name, Imperial Cricket Council. He spoke about the formation of communist thought in colonial India, suggesting to look beyond the popular notion of Europe being an icon where ideas originate and develop.
