{"id":1697,"date":"2016-07-25T14:50:02","date_gmt":"2016-07-25T14:50:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/?p=1697"},"modified":"2025-07-21T16:07:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T11:07:13","slug":"chasing-dreams-stanford-tech-gurus-sustainability-game-changers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/chasing-dreams-stanford-tech-gurus-sustainability-game-changers\/","title":{"rendered":"Chasing Dreams at Stanford with Tech Gurus and Sustainability Game Changers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hasan Naqvi and Moizza Salahuddin, two of the Habib University rising sustainability game changers, currently attending the Stanford Summer International Honors Program (SSIHP), write about their personal experiences in making their dreams come true.<\/p>\n<p>However, I am extremely grateful for Habib University\u2019s mission and pedagogy. As a student of one of the emerging <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/blog\/why-habib-ranks-among-top-engineering-universities-in-pakistan\/\">top engineering universities in Pakistan<\/a>, my two years at HU have shaped my thinking in ways that stand out here at Stanford.t <a href=\"https:\/\/summer.stanford.edu\/programs\/ihp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stanford University<\/a>. Being amongst people from all over the world and around the brightest faculty, it is never easy to make your mark and be heard.<\/p>\n<p>However, I am extremely grateful for Habib University\u2019s mission and pedagogy, as going through two years at HU has changed me as a person, and when I sit in the classroom here with all the diversity, I bring to the table a very different thought. Especially as an engineer, Habib has instilled \u2018ethics and awareness\u2019 within me when it comes to thinking, using the principles of engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Among the students at Stanford are tech-oriented students, students concerned about sustainability and the environment, business students, and so on. When we all come together, the outcome produced is exceptionally fruitful.<\/p>\n<p>So although the learning experience has been tough, having experienced the Habib curriculum is what is helping me go through this learning process in a much better way.<\/p>\n<p>I have been exploring and travelling most of the time! A lot of visits to San Francisco and Palo Alto, and a couple of visits to Fremont, San Jose, and other cities have really gotten me used to being in the Bay Area. Our Resident Assistants think that we (the HU students) are the most active students in the dorm since we have visited numerous places on campus and outside campus as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Representing Pakistan as Sustainability Game Changers<\/h2>\n<p>Life has been made tremendously simple thanks to Google Maps and all the other apps we have around us now. I sometimes walk with the Habib flag on me so people stop and ask me what my flag says, and that turns into an interesting conversation. A lot of the South Asians we met have asked us where we are from, and once they get to know us, they are always interested in finding out more about HU. We go through a practice of meeting new people and seeing new faces day and night.<\/p>\n<p>Being present in Silicon Valley is a great blessing, as from time to time, you get to see around you a great number of CEOs and other founders of start-ups and global technology companies. So far, I have met with the following people and attended their talks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/guykawasaki.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guy Kawasaki<\/a> \u2013 Chief Evangelist at Canva<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/generalcatalyst.com\/team\/dr-steve-herrod\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Steve Herrod<\/a> \u2013 Managing Director at General Catalyst (Former CTO of VMware)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/researcher.ibm.com\/researcher\/view.php?person=us-welser\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Jeff Welser<\/a> \u2013 Vice President and Lab Director at IBM Research<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/simonmhchan?trk=prof-samename-name\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simon Chan<\/a> \u2013 CEO and Co-Founder of PredictionIO<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cs.stanford.edu\/people\/jure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jure Leskovec<\/a> \u2013 Chief Scientist at Pinterest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026and the list goes on\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Experiencing the Office of Sustainability at Stanford<\/h2>\n<p>Moizza Salahuddin: Earlier this year, Habib University\u2019s Student Council passed a resolution put forth by the Society for Sustainability \u2013Habib\u2019s own student-led Environmental Club. The resolution called for the installation of a formal Office of Sustainability on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of a \u2018sustainable campus\u2019 is to implement projects or manage everyday campus life responsibly to become eco-friendly in the long term. It is basically a conscious effort to reduce the carbon footprint individually as well as collectively. A dreamy idea of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, the Office ensures that campus life and operations are \u2018sustainable\u2019 at all levels, and so it is always innovating, experimenting, and hence, unsurprisingly, facing unprecedented challenges along the way!<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I put up a \u2018Life Event\u2019 on Facebook that mentioned my meeting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/meghan-brightwater-ab734515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ms. Meghan Brightwater<\/a> on July 16<sup>th<\/sup>, 2016. Ms. Brightwater is the Outreach Officer for Stanford\u2019s Office of Sustainability, and getting in touch with the Office in any way possible was one of my biggest goals this summer, something I had been working on for a long time. My club aspired for ideas and to learn from the experiences of initiatives around the world in order to gain a better analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Brightwater was intrigued by the idea of a \u2018brand new university\u2019, dreaming big. She was especially generous when it came to information, telling me about her experiences in the office, the troubles working practically, influential strategies, and, in short, the very idealistic idea of an office that\u2019s green! She was open to ideas about how differently I envision sustainability at Habib and discussed with me her approach to making the campus sustainable, while also referring me to development cases more similar to Habib.<\/p>\n<p>She also mentioned that sustainability efforts at Stanford have had a 30-year history of policy-making, mobilizing departments, and experimenting with newer initiatives. If you walk around Stanford, you will see \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/sustainable.stanford.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Stanford<\/a>\u2019 posters at many places. From residence and dining, to power and utilities, recently, they have introduced strategies to initiate carbon-neutrality in sports and athletics as well!<\/p>\n<p>On 21<sup>st<\/sup> July, I also met <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zoominfo.com\/p\/Rashmi-Sahai\/1324017985\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rashmi Sahai<\/a>, who leads Management and Assessments at the Office. She is responsible for energy audits and campus-wide data collection (enormous job!). She welcomed me to join her in a very practical meeting with a vendor regarding a new power saver software for devices at Stanford. Rashmi further plans to introduce me to the <a href=\"http:\/\/pathology.stanford.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stanford Pathology Department<\/a> to discuss the challenges they faced in \u2018becoming green\u2019 and the strategies, very specific to laboratories, they came up with.<\/p>\n<p>I will also be learning from the experiences of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/fahmida-i-ahmed-2b431\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ms. Fahmida Ahmed<\/a>, Director of Stanford\u2019s Office of Sustainability. She was among the first ones, says Ms. Brightwater, to work at the policy level, trying to experiment with ways in which to bring together different departments on one table and make them think about something radically new, i.e., sustainability. In a highly decentralized campus such as Stanford, it is profoundly challenging, and related efforts to work through the system are plausible! Her work at the policy level is exactly what I am interested in, and I enthusiastically look forward to meeting her on August 3<sup>rd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, I have been in contact with the student leaders of \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/studentsforasustainablestanford.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Students for a Sustainable Stanford<\/a>\u2019, Caroline and John. As regular Stanford students, they work day in and day out to bring about change, living it and critiquing it.
