{"id":1472,"date":"2016-04-27T07:41:12","date_gmt":"2016-04-27T07:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/?p=1472"},"modified":"2025-07-25T11:46:52","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T06:46:52","slug":"hu-computer-science-students-earn-titles-respect-iba-probattle16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/hu-computer-science-students-earn-titles-respect-iba-probattle16\/","title":{"rendered":"HU Computer Science Students Earn Titles &#038; Respect at IBA ProBattle\u201916"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Teams participating in Pseudo Code and Logic Hunt segments of the renowned competition return with first and second place trophies respectively<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HABIB UNIVERSITY, April 27: <\/strong>Four students enrolled in Habib University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/academics\/sse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Science &amp; Engineering<\/a> have returned with top honors from one of the biggest inter-university competitions in the city of Karachi.<\/p>\n<p>Anusha Fatima (B.S. Computer Science, 2018), Affan Aslam (B.S. Computer Science, 2018), Amin Shiraz Gilani (B.S. Computer Science, 2018) and Noorullah Farid (B.S. Computer Science, 2019) represented Habib University in the Pseudo Code and Logic Hunt segments of the ProBattle\u201916 competition organized by the Institute of Business Administration. Anusha, Affan and Amin formed the Pseudo Code team, while Noorullah teamed up with Anusha and Amin to represent Habib University in the Logic Hunt segment.<\/p>\n<p>The three sophomores \u2013 Anusha, Affan and Amin \u2013 are currently enrolled in the Databases, Functional Data Structures, Nature of Computation and Object Oriented Programming courses at Habib University. Anusha and Amin are co-chairs of Habib University\u2019s Brain.Hack() computer science club, while Affan recently represented Habib University at an <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/in-the-company-of-great-minds-the-experience-of-qip-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international conference on quantum computing<\/a> in Banff, Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Their team for Pseudo Code \u2013 a competition that tests participants\u2019 knowledge of problem solving \u2013 took first place thanks to what the students called their \u201cstrong theoretical knowledge of computer logic and coding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Affan while reflecting on their team\u2019s strengths said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We have really good Computer Science courses at Habib University, and our faculty\u2019s dedication just makes them great. As far as theoretical computer science is concerned, I felt that our courses are far better than what other students are being taught.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Competing with 17 other teams in the Pseudo Code category, the three comfortably beat the competition to clinch the top prize in the segment. \u201cWe were able to solve all the problems presented to us accurately, something that most other students were unable to do,\u201d Anusha recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the organizers later told us that we won by a huge margin. The second place team was nowhere close to us,\u201d added Amin.<\/p>\n<p>To be the best team in the running for first place, the three worked as a close-knit team to achieve their goals. \u201cOne question required a lot of computation, so we gave that to Amin to solve as he\u2019s really good at math,\u201d said Anusha. \u201cThis way, we split the work according to each other\u2019s strengths and weaknesses,\u201d Amin added.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1474\" style=\"width: 712px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1474\" class=\"wp-image-1474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/inside-1-8.jpg\" alt=\"inside-1\" width=\"702\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/inside-1-8.jpg 702w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/inside-1-8-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/inside-1-8-620x297.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From Left to Right: Amin Shiraz Gilani (B.S. Computer Science).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the Logic Hunt segment too, Habib students did exceptionally. Though they came in second place, the margin of loss was \u201conly one point!\u201d as they were quick to add. This segment involved questions related to math, vocabulary, pattern matching and IQ.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom ProBattle\u201916, we learnt what we should and should not do when organizing such events,\u201d Noorullah said. \u201cWe really hope to do something similar here soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/SSE\/dr-waqar-saleem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Waqar Saleem<\/a>, Program Director of Computer Science at Habib, said: \u201cIt\u2019s great that we\u2019re able to attract such bright students; and when they go out and win such competitions, it is a strong validation for the <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/academics\/sse\/bs-computer-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">computer science program<\/a> at Habib.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We now know that the thoughts and ideas we had when we started designing Habib University\u2019s Computer Science program were on the right track and that they actually work.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teams participating in Pseudo Code and Logic Hunt segments of the renowned competition return with first and second place trophies respectively HABIB UNIVERSITY, April 27: Four students enrolled in Habib University\u2019s School of Science &amp; Engineering have returned with top honors from one of the biggest inter-university competitions in the city of Karachi.
