When Habib University invited Dr. Nergis Mavalvala<\/a>, Dean of MIT\u2019s School of Science and a leading figure in the discovery of gravitational waves, to deliver its 10th Yohsin Lecture, the visit was built around two full-day engagements ahead of the lecture itself. One particularly catalytic session was held on the morning of 25th<\/sup> September 2026, with over forty scientists and academics from over twenty institutions across Pakistan arriving at the University from as far as Peshawar, Quetta, Lahore, and Islamabad, representing nearly every province of Pakistan in a single room. Many had rearranged teaching schedules and travelled considerable distances for the two-hour dialogue. The deeper purpose Habib University had set for itself in making this common table available was to ask what it would take for scientists across Pakistan to do first-rate research from within Pakistan.<\/p>\n

That question, posed in the session\u2019s opening remarks by the University\u2019s Associate Dean Undergraduate Education and Professor, Computer Science, Dr. Shah Jamal Alam framed the rich exchange that followed. Pakistan, the organizers observed, has no shortage of serious scientific work, but much of it unfolds in isolation, inside institutions and cities that rarely have occasion to meet. Program Director of Integrated Sciences and Mathematics at the University, Assistant Professor Dr. Imran Ali hosted the session titled \u201cWhere Discovery Comes From\u201d<\/em> as a deliberate act of bridge-building. This was in no sense an attempt to resolve the country\u2019s scientific fragmentation in one morning, but instead to put the right people in the same conversation, and facilitate the continuation of integral dialogue and collaboration.
\nDr. Mavalvala mirrored the University\u2019s sentiment, stating, “There has to be some mechanism by which you get the scientific community together to even decide what are things we’re going to invest in.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A Pakistani-Born Scientist Returns Home to Share Hard-Won Wisdom<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dr. Mavalvala proved to be an inspiring presence, and a figure with unique resonance for the Pakistani scientific community in the room. Born in Lahore and educated in Karachi before her physics degree in the US, PhD at MIT<\/a>, and postdoctoral work at Caltech, she has spent over three decades on the LIGO project – the laser interferometer that made the first direct detection of gravitational waves in 2016, a phenomenon Einstein had predicted a century earlier. Her contributions to LIGO\u2019s ultra-sensitive interferometers and to quantum measurement science have earned her a MacArthur Fellowship, a share of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, and election to the National Academy of Sciences. She has served as Dean of MIT\u2019s School of Science since 2020.<\/p>\n

Speaking to a room that included physicists, engineers, biologists, and university deans, Dr. Mavalvala used LIGO\u2019s history as a case study in how science at scale actually gets built, resultantly providing much to unpack across the session for all present. She traced LIGO\u2019s origins to a 1975 meeting between two founders, an experimentalist and a theorist, whose initial proposal to the US National Science Foundation was sent back with instructions to first build consensus across the broader scientific community. What began as a two-person concept in the 1970s became, by the 2016 discovery paper, a collaboration of over a thousand authors, more than half of them students \u2013 a point emphasized by Dr. Mavalvala. Along the way, LIGO had to invent institutional structures including an open scientific collaboration that traded data access for labour and intellectual contribution, a governance system built on trusted leadership, and a deliberate programme of training \u201cmultilingual\u201d scientists who could move between instrumentation, data analysis, and theory. Without that cross-training, Dr. Mavalvala noted, the project\u2019s early teams nearly derailed themselves by talking past one another. It was, in effect, a live illustration of the exact problem Habib University had convened the room to discuss: How do separate scientific communities learn to build something together that none of them could build alone?<\/p>\n

Translating <\/strong>Dr. Mavalvala\u2019s<\/strong> L<\/strong>esson<\/strong>s from LIGO<\/strong> to a Pakistani <\/strong>C<\/strong>ontext<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The conversation moved quickly from LIGO\u2019s history to the practical question Dr. Ali Imran had posed as the host: What could this mean for Pakistan? Dr, Mavalvala\u2019s answer leaned on a distinction she returns to often as a university administrator, that intellectual collaboration has to be built from the bottom up, among faculty who identify a shared problem, while institutions provide the forums and resources to make that collaboration possible. She pointed to shared scientific infrastructure, citing the model of large international telescopes, where membership grants dedicated access to instruments and data without requiring every partner to build or even visit the facility, as a plausible way for resource-constrained scientific communities to gain a stake in frontier instruments through negotiated access rather than by building comparable infrastructure alone. She also spoke to mentorship as an infrastructure of its own, emphasizing the responsibility of senior scientists to deliberately open their networks to students, since students entering research have no networks yet of their own. “Our most sacred responsibility is to mentor our students. And along with that comes opening our networks to our students as well<\/em>,<\/em>“<\/em> she underscored.<\/p>\n

What made the session more than a lecture was the density of Pakistani institutional experience in the room, much of which surfaced in response. A director from the National Centre for Physics in Islamabad described Pakistan\u2019s participation in CERN\u2019s CMS experiment, part of a network spanning 257 institutes across 57 countries, built from a Pakistan-based silicon detector lab funded by a $3 million government investment and now training students who go on to PhDs abroad. A researcher from the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences spoke about a newly built quantum science and technology laboratory, backed by an investment of 940 million rupees, and asked how to translate that infrastructure into sustained student interest. A faculty member from LUMS raised the recurring challenge of attracting undergraduates to physics over more \u201csecure\u201d-seeming fields, a struggle Dr. Mavalvala noted mirrors what MIT and Stanford face with computer science. A physicist from FC College Lahore described spending twenty years assembling a qubit research lab after training in the US, only to find recruiting students to work in it just as difficult as building it had been. A biologist from AKUH used the moment to note that her institution\u2019s science departments are already de-departmentalizing, oriented toward exactly the interdisciplinary structure Dr. Mavalvala was describing as the future MIT is still building toward through joint faculty hiring.<\/p>\n

Other exchanges turned to harder questions: How researchers from the Global South build credibility in international peer review; whether defense funding\u2019s outsized budgets create uncomfortable incentives for dual-use physics; how institutions sustain multi-decade research projects, like LIGO\u2019s own quarter-century arc, when career incentives reward fast publication; and how universities should be restructuring science curricula in response to artificial intelligence. On the latter, Dr. Mavalvala offered her observation that no university she knows of has found a solution to the question of AI yet, and that liberal arts education is more essential now, not less, for equipping scientists to navigate a technology with both extraordinary potential and real hazards, adding, “This is the moment where liberal arts couldn’t be more important.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A<\/strong>n Intellectual<\/strong> H<\/strong>ub<\/strong> for Conversations that Will Echo Far Beyond the University and Across the Nation<\/strong><\/h2>\n

What the session ultimately demonstrated was not a single breakthrough insight but the need for a structural shift. Habib University placing itself deliberately in the role of convener surfaced, in a single morning, the shared problems and half-formed solutions scattered across a national scientific community that otherwise has few occasions to compare notes. Habib University\u2019s framing at the outset \u2014 that the future of science in Pakistan depends less on any one institution than on how well institutions work together \u2014 was borne out by the range of voices in the room: CERN collaborators, quantum optics experimentalists, liberal arts deans, engineering directors, and early-career researchers, each carrying a piece of the same larger question.<\/p>\n

Dr. Usman Habib, Associate Professor at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI), offered his considered view on the unique opportunity, \u201cThe session with Dr. Mavalvala was exceptional. The interactive Q&A format and the opportunity to ask technical questions broadened my perspective on scientific inquiry, curiosity, and the importance of having such special guests. I also valued my personal conversation with Dr. Mavalvala over high tea, where we discussed curriculum development, research outcomes, and ways of evaluating research impact. Her thoughtful responses gave me much to reflect on.\u201d<\/p>\n

For an international audience, the session is worthy of note not as an isolated event but as a model. Habib University positioned itself not as the source of the answers, but as the space where the right people could be gathered to look for them together, and where Dr. Nergis Mavalvala\u2019s homecoming became the occasion for a national conversation about what Pakistani science could build if its institutions worked in unison instead of working in parallel. If the conversations that began that morning continue, as organizers hope, at institutions across the country, Habib\u2019s role as the convening point may well prove to be the starting point towards sustained, and necessary, collaboration across Pakistan\u2019s scientific institutions.<\/p>\n
