Raised in Dubai, Urdu was spoken at home but never taught formally. I could understand it conversationally, but reading and writing were unfamiliar territories\u2014until I took <em>Jehan-e-Urdu<\/em>, a mandatory course in the <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/academics\/habib-core\/\">Habib Liberal Core Curriculum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What began as a requirement soon became a transformative journey. I learned to write basic words like <em>peeche<\/em> and <em>neeche<\/em>, and eventually read Urdu literature. I discovered the language\u2019s rhythm, emotion, and cultural richness. That experience sparked a question: What if children had better tools to learn Urdu from an early age?<\/p>\n<p>That question led to my final year thesis project: Dibi \u2013 Huruf Abad Edition.<\/p>\n<h1>What is Dibi?<\/h1>\n<p>Dibi is a play-based Urdu learning console designed for children aged 5 to 9. It connects to a screen and uses large tactile inputs\u2014buttons, a joystick, and a slider\u2014to make learning Urdu interactive and fun.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, I aimed to create a screen-free Urdu learning tool, but research and expert interviews revealed that screens are here to stay. So, I reimagined the interaction: instead of removing screens, I made them physical, joyful, and developmentally active.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10585\" style=\"width: 712px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10585\" class=\"wp-image-10585 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FINAL-GAJAR-UI.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FINAL-GAJAR-UI.jpg 702w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FINAL-GAJAR-UI-620x318.jpg 620w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FINAL-GAJAR-UI-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/HU-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FINAL-GAJAR-UI-351x180.jpg 351w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10585\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The game world of Gajar Ka Halwa that explores sentence structure in a festive nighttime setting.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>The Game World of Huruf Abad<\/h2>\n<p>At the heart of Dibi is a game pack called Huruf Abad, featuring five original games:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Truck ka Safar \u2013 Builds spelling and word formation skills.<\/li>\n<li>Machli ka Jaal \u2013 Enhances vocabulary through a matching fish game.<\/li>\n<li>Mithu ka Bol \u2013 Teaches sound recognition with a talking parrot.<\/li>\n<li>Patang ki Uraan \u2013 Improves grammar as a kite flies higher with correct answers.<\/li>\n<li>Gajar ka Halwa \u2013 Explores sentence structure in a festive nighttime setting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each game is designed with a specific Urdu language learning goal, blending familiar cultural elements with modern, clean visuals. I collaborated with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Habib University developers who coded the games in Unity.<\/li>\n<li>A dedicated teammate who helped prototype the physical console using Arduino.<\/li>\n<li>My family, mentors, and classmates, who tested prototypes and offered feedback.<\/li>\n<li>Parents and children, who participated in usability testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This project pushed me to wear many hats\u2014researcher, designer, hardware developer, and storyteller\u2014and helped me grow in ways no other project had.<\/p>\n<h2>A Showcase to Remember<\/h2>\n<p>Just days before our final thesis showcase, political tensions between Pakistan and India led to a postponement. But when the event was rescheduled, it became the highlight of my Habib journey. It helped me reconnect with my culture and language, and I hope it can do the same for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>As I graduate with the Class of 2025 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/habib.edu.pk\/academics\/ahss\/communication-and-design\/\">Communication &amp; Design<\/a> program, I leave with more than a portfolio piece. I leave with a renewed love for Urdu, confidence in my creative process, and a dream to build more tools that make language learning joyful and accessible\u2014especially for children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Author<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Haya Imtiaz is a Communication and Design graduate (Class of 2025) with a passion for playful, human-centered design. A visual thinker from Dubai, her work blends storytelling, identity, and language through illustration, interaction design, and game-based learning.
