Dr. Anjum Altaf Joins Habib University as its First Provost


Mr. Wasif Rizvi, President Habib University, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Anjum Altaf as Habib University’s first Vice President and Provost, effective October 15, 2014.

In this position, Dr. Altaf will serve as the chief academic officer for the university. He will be responsible for all academic affairs of the institution. He will provide leadership in the areas of curriculum; academic personnel and faculty affairs; research and sponsored programs; program centers, experiential education and civic engagement; and student success and global education. As a member of the President’s Cabinet, Dr. Altaf will assist in the development and administration of university policies and strategic goals.

Dr. Altaf brings a distinguished record of academic scholarship, teaching and administrative leadership to his new role. Prior to joining Habib University, Dr. Altaf served as Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Lahore University of Management Sciences. He has also been associated with the Applied Economics Research Centre at the University of Karachi, the Department of City and Regional Planning and the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, and with the East Asia and Pacific Region of the World Bank in Washington, DC. He also moderates The South Asian Idea Weblog, a learning resource for college students in South Asia.

Dr. Altaf has earned his Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University. He has a Masters in Economics from Stanford University and a Masters in Electrical Engineering from Oregon State University.

As the Provost, Dr. Altaf will steer the academic vision and manage all aspects of academic and research programs in consultation with the Deans. His responsibilities include strategic planning, formulating and implementing scholarly and educational programs across the university, leading its academic accreditation, generating support for faculty research and integrating academic life and student life. He will help foster positive and productive relationships between the University and its various constituencies and build support for the institution nationally and internationally.

The search of provost began in 2013, when a search committee was put in place consisting of the Academic committee of the Board of Governors and the President of Habib University. After a rigorous process, the selection committee finalized Dr. Anjum Altaf out of several nominations.

Habib, Chairman of House of Habib, who provided their guidance and support at various stages of the search process. I am confident that Dr. Altaf will be an invaluable member of the Habib University community and will be instrumental in establishing it as a preeminent institution of higher learning in Pakistan.”
